New England Aquarium
When we took our trip to Salem last weekend, we, of course, had to make a stop in Boston. There is so much to do in Boston, but something we have not done before was visit the New England Aquarium. This trip, we made a special stop as guests of this popular attraction.
Located within walking distance of the historical sites such as Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market, the New England Aquarium sits on the water front, which is the perfect setting for this family friendly spot.
When you first walk in, you are greeted by an unusual site, penguins that look like they are from Happy Feet. It was fascinating to watch them interact with each other! There is a lot going on with these guys! We happened to walk in when a worker was in the water with them. She was very knowledgable and shared lots of interesting information about the penguins with us as they swam around her.
We then moved on to see the many fish tanks of exotic fish lining the walkways. They have a large variety of colorful fish. In the center of the aquarium is a very large tank with giant sea turtles, sharks, large fish, and more. We saw scuba divers swimming amongst them all as they swam together. As we worked our way up the walkways, we found ourselves looking down from the top of the very tank that we had been observing. It was cool to see the different perspective. There were a couple of large sea turtles that would come up to the top and eat lettuce. My kids loved seeing this.
In an outside exhibit, we were able to see seals interacting with one another with an open view to the ocean. It was a beautiful setting. There was much to see and explore. My kids enjoyed seeing the jellies in the tanks, too.
Their very favorite exhibit was the touch tank. New England Aquarium boasts the country's largest touch tank. Here, children and adults can reach in the water and touch the friendly sting rays and small sharks. I loved seeing the expressions on their faces as they discovered the textures of the animals in the water!
Visiting the New England Aquarium was a fantastic experience for us and we would definitely love to come back. Next time, I would love to come back to participate in a whale watch, which is an available option in Boston! To plan your visit, check out their site. It is definitely something you should see when in Boston.
