While summer is all about a break from the books, it's also a good idea for kids to practice reading and writing to keep their skills up. Journaling can be a fun way to accomplish some writing practice, but coming up with ideas isn't always easy.

If you are looking for a quick journal prompt for writing practice, we've provided 25 journal prompts for kids here. I always had fun with my kids journaling and reading all their creative answers, and hope you have fun too!

25 journal prompts for kids

1. Where is your happy place? Describe that place.

2. What is the best gift you have ever given someone else? Why was it the best gift?

3. In your spare time, what do you like to do? Make a list.

4. If you could go anywhere on vacation, where would you go? Why?

5. What 4 words describe you? Why?

6. What do you dislike and/or like about school? Why?

7. How do you prepare for a big game? Why?

8. Who is your best friend(s)? What makes someone a good friend?

9. Pretend you are a dog or cat. What kind of dog or cat would you be? What would your name be? Who would you want your owner to be?

10. Look out your window. What do you see? Draw a picture too.

11. Finish this sentence: Somewhere over the rainbow . . .

12. Describe what your bedroom looks like. Do you keep it clean or messy?

13. Name things you could do on a rainy day.
